Environmental Management System

Management System

Asiana Airlines was the first carrier to obtain the ISO14001 (Environmental management system) certification in 1995, and defined the environment as a matter for decision-making based on ISO140001. Consequently, Asiana Airlines recognizes the social responsibility for environmental pollution prevention besides the fundamental objective of the company – the quest for profit. To prevent environmental pollution, Asiana Airlines has established an environmental policy and objectives in detail, and implements them in order to minimize pollution.

As the noise and exhaust gases generated by the aircraft operation are an important issue, Asian Airlines maintains and operates Stage III engines only, which comply with the noise regulation criteria set by the ICAO (International Air Transport Association) for all operational aircraft to minimize noise and exhaust emissions.

Accordingly, each team implements the environmental management program continuously in order to manage the environmental impact, and improves the program by management review after internal and external inspection once a year.

Objectives

Asiana Airlines has set overall environmental objectives that fit into the company’s business environment, based on environmental impact assessment results that are implemented in accordance with the company’s policy, as well as the ISO14001 (environmental management system) requirements. Asiana Airlines compares and reviews its environmental objectives every year.

Environmental objectives of the company

Introduction of new model aircraft and resource saving

  • Introduces and operates low-noise aircraft (Stage III engines), and develops and executes a noise reduction procedure.
  • Mounts and operates low-exhaust engines, and develops and executes a low exhaust procedure.
  • Implements energy saving measures for each area.

Minimized exhaust emission

  • Manages all business sites so as not to produce over 50% of the waste material as regulated by law.
  • Reduces the production of water, atmospheric and soil polluting materials, and increases the recycling ratio in all business sites.
  • Strong management of car exhaust, waste water, and waste material production by the partner company.
  • Manages legal compliance of aircraft deicing and cleaning waste water processing.

Transparent and systematic environmental management

  • Reduced fuel consumption by enhanced efficiency.
  • Reduced energy usage volume.
  • Active adoption of recyclable materials (increased parts recycling).

Pioneering environmental protection events

  • Uses environmentally-friendly materials and products.
  • Contributes to the settlement of the social environmental culture by supporting and participating in internal and external environmental protection events.
  • Turns major business sites into environmental training centers.
  • Places priority on conformance with international environmental protection agreements.

Impact Assessment

Asiana Airlines continuously monitors the detailed environmental impact assessments carried out for each team, and checks the environmental impact assessment program biannually or annually. In addition, an annual environmental impact assessment is performed on the operation of aircraft with a wide environmental impact, as well as its major business sites, so that the areas that do have a great impact on the environment can be registered in the environmental impact registrar for later review. Even if the environmental impact is insignificant, all elements that are deemed to originate from business operation are thoroughly controlled and managed.

Major Environmental Effects

Business area

Major environmental effect

Aircraft operation

Aircraft exhaust/take-off and landing noise/fuel consumption by aircraft operation/cabin wastes

Aircraft maintenance

Aircraft maintenance wastes/parts cleaning water/harmful chemical substance/atmospheric pollution materials

Building/Facilities

Filth/waste water, waste production, building fire extinguishing facilities/cooling materials/energy consumption

    • Asiana Airlines carries out regular enterprise-wide environmental impact analysis. Furthermore, assessments are performed when process changes occur, and the assessments are also reviewed by the environment general administration team, so that environmental impact factors can be prevented in advance.
    • Detailed activities include occasional environmental inspection, site checks and advance harmful factor identification, and monitoring by regular measurement. If an issue is deemed important, the environmental committee is convened to collect opinions.
    • In addition, the director’s integrated meeting for group environmental safety is held 4 times a year at group level, so that management can better understand an environmental issue, and receives a report on the status of achievements and activities up to that time point. Management is also encouraged to take an interest in and recognize the importance of the environment and safety
