Gastroenteritis strikes Royal Caribbean in Brazil

Tuesday, 16 March 2010

Royal Caribbean's Visions of the Sea was temporarily quarantined in Brazil after nearly 50 passengers became sick over the weekend.

"At least 47 passengers on the Vision of the Seas, operated by Royal Caribbean International, were stricken by what we believe are Noroviruses that cause gastroenteritis," a spokesman for the National Agency for Sanitary Vigilance said.

Royal Caribbean spokesman Alexandre Raith said the ship is taking "an abundance of caution in order to conduct a cleaning as ordered by the Brazil's National Agency for Sanitary Vigilance."

Passengers boarding the next cruise, a three-night, roundtrip voyage from Sao Paulo to Buzios, Brazil will lose a day of their trip as a result of the Norovirus outbreak.

It is scheduled to return to port in Sao Paulo at 7 a.m. Monday for the cruise.

Royal Caribbean passengers on Monday's cruise will be reimbursed one-third of the price, which can be used as onboard credit, hotel accommodations or other incidental costs.
