Shanghai Airlines to leave Star Alliance

Friday, 30 July 2010

Following its recent merger with China Eastern Airlines, Shanghai Airlines will terminate its membership with Star Alliance by the end of October.

Passengers will still have access to the Star Alliance benefits when travelling with Shanghai Airlines until 31 October 2010 after which time Air China will represent the alliance in Shanghai and across China.

Star Alliance, over competing alliances, maintains the strongest presence in region, with more frequencies from Mainland China to Europe, Asia and North America.

“Star Alliance, together with Air China, is now exploring options to secure a wider presence in the region” they said.

China Eastern Air has been slated to join the SkyTeam alliance by mid-2011.
