Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa, Kota Kinabalu receives two environmental awards
Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort and Spa, Kota Kinabalu was awarded the “Outstanding Environmental Friendly Private Organisation” during the Sabah Environmental Award ceremony held on 25 July 2009, while Tulip Noorazyze, the resort’s director of communications, was awarded the ”Outstanding Environmental Leadership” award. The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, YB Datuk Masidi Manjun presented the awards. The “Outstanding Environmental Friendly Private Organisation Award” is presented to a private organisation for the outstanding vision in the planning, management, practice, implementation and operation of its activities towards reducing impact on the environment. The “Outstanding Environmental Leadership Award” is presented to the Chairman of an environmental project who has served with outstanding leadership qualities while maintaining the support, participation and cooperation from the local community in the enhancement of the environment. Judging was based on services rendered to the environment, leadership and teamwork, public participation and involvement, nature of project or service, time and effort, environmental management skills, impact on the community, impact on the environment, personal environmental practices, environmental culture, sustainability protection and conservation and community and government support. The resort has won 12 environmental awards since it was ISO14001 certified in 2000. Amongst the environmental awards the resort has won are the Prime Minister’s Hibiscus Award, PATA Gold Award for a Corporate Environmental Programme, Corporate Citizen Award and Most Environmentally Friendly Private Organisation Award. Part of the resort’s environmental activities involve contribution through the adoption of schools, the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Sabah Chapter subcommittee for Environment Safety and Security, and working closely with Kota Kinabalu City Hall as well as with the public to share its knowledge and commitment towards conserving and preserving the environment. “We are very honoured to be given this recognition and we pledge our commitment to the state to continue our efforts in conserving and preserving the environment through hotel activities,” said Andrew Steele, general manager of the resort. |
