Storms delay Oasis of the Seas

Wednesday, 11 November 2009

The arrival of Oasis of the Seas will be delayed by two days due to stormy weather conditions, Royal Caribbean announced this week.

Oasis of the Seas has been hit with hurricane strong winds and high seas while crossing the North Atlantic Ocean on its way to Port Everglades.

It is now expected to arrive in Fort Lauderdale on the morning of November 13, but the cruise line said the delay would not affect inaugural events, promotional activities or revenue sailings.

In a blog posted on Friday, Royal Caribbean Chairman Richard Fain said the cruise ship had faced some peak waves which exceeded 60 feet.

“The weather has been anything but cooperative.  In fact, far from diminishing, the storm has gotten worse and they are now facing significant wave heights of up to 35 feet”

Despite this, Captain William Wright said in a video report that the ship, which had been forced to reduce its speed to just six knots, was “remarkable” in handling the heavy conditions.

He added that all the finishing work was able to continue without being impacted by the weather in any way.

As Oasis of the Seas is a cruise ship and not an ocean liner, it is unlikely it will ever encounter such a storm again in its lifetime.
