THE ACRISS CODE EXPLAINED

You may have noticed that in the description of rental car categories, a four letter code is usually included. This is a universal system used throughout the world, and is known as the ACRISS code, which stands for Association of Car Rental Industry Systems and Standards.

The code relates to four separate characteristics which apply to rental vehicles, and these are Class, Type, Transmission and Air Conditioning.

The following are the most common variations of each characteristic:

These characteristics are then used to describe the car category, for example:

An EBMN category vehicle would be:
E = Economy, B = Two/Three Door. M = Manual, N = Without Air Conditioning

While a CDAR would be:
C = Compact, D = Four/Five Door, A = Automatic, R = With Air Conditioning.

Although other characteristics are beginning to appear, eg, used to describe hybrid cars, all-wheel-drive cars etc, these are the most common ones you will encounter.
