"Disrespectful" Pero holds off Mt Erebus flight

Monday, 30 November 2009

Christchurch businessman Mike Pero said last week he would postpone a charter flight to Mt Erebus following heated remarks from Air New Zealand.

Mike Pero had planned to charter a flight to Mt Erebus early next year for 307 passengers, with the families of Erebus victims getting priority according to TVNZ.

After the announcement of the charter flight had been made on Wednesday, Air NZ slammed Pero, calling his actions a PR stunt.

The airline said the timing of the announcement, which fell on the eve of the 30th anniversary of the Erebus tragedy which claimed 257 lives, was an "attempt to leverage commercial gain."

It added that the plans were "nothing more than commercial opportunism of the lowest kind and deeply disrespectful."

However, Pero told ONE News that the airline had since offered to work with him to facilitate contact with the families of Erebus victims so that he could better understand their wishes before proceeding.
