Uncle Sam to show travelers NYC nightlife

Tuesday, 21 April 2009

First time travelers or those wanting to find the best night life hot spots in New York City will now be able to with the help of a new “walking tour” of the Big Apple’s (in)famous neighborhoods.

Uncle Sam’s New York is deviating from the “traditional” format of a walking tour, by offering travelers the ability to participate in pub crawls and restaurant runs of popular New York City dining and revelry attractions from Downtown to ‘The Village’.

“Our goal for our pub crawls and walking tours is for our customers to go home with a story, so we show them the real New York City as locals know it – the neighborhoods otherwise untouched by tourists,” said Sam Cook, Uncle Sam’s New York President.

Setting itself apart from the more ‘scholarly’ approaches to walking tours, Uncle Sam’s tours are characterized by local stories formed by the eclectic backgrounds of the company’s local tour guides.

“I love sharing the essence of New York City with out-of-towners.  The best feeling is when tourists pair up and ask me for a personal recommendation on where to explore next,” said Matthew Baker, one of Uncle Sam’s New York tour guides.

An example of a walking tour/pub crawl is the East Village Pub Crawl, which features sites including the Old Town Bar, Pete’s Tavern, Cooper Union, and McSorley’s Old Ale House.  Not only were these sites frequented by well known personalities, but also played crucial roles in the development of several political and cultural movements.
